Are Your Hands Making You Sick? Here’s What You Should Know

Why Is Handwashing So Important?

Clean hands are one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections. Every day, our hands come into contact with countless surfaces, objects and people. During these activities, germs can transfer onto our hands and enter our bodies when we touch our eyes, nose or mouth.
Regular handwashing with soap and water helps remove harmful germs, reduces the risk of common infections and protects the people around us.

Why Is Handwashing So Important?
Our hands can carry bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms even when they appear clean. Without proper hand hygiene, these germs can spread through food, frequently touched surfaces and direct contact with others.
Practising good hand hygiene can help reduce the spread of:

● Respiratory infections, including the common cold and flu
● Diarrhoeal illnesses and gastrointestinal infections
● Certain eye and skin infections
● Infections transmitted through contaminated hands and surfaces
Handwashing is particularly important for children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

When Should You Wash Your Hands?
Handwashing should be part of your everyday routine, especially:

● Before eating or preparing food: To prevent germs from entering the body through food.
● After using the toilet: To reduce the spread of germs that can cause gastrointestinal illness.
● After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose: To help prevent respiratory infections from spreading.
● Before and after caring for someone who is unwell: To protect both the caregiver and the patient.
● After touching animals or handling waste: To remove potentially harmful microorganisms.
● Whenever your hands are visibly dirty: To maintain proper personal hygiene.

The Right Way to Wash Your Hands

Simply rinsing your hands with water is not enough. Effective handwashing involves five easy steps:

  1. Wet: Wet your hands with clean, running water.
  2. Lather: Apply soap and rub your hands together, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
  3. Scrub: Continue scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse: Rinse thoroughly under clean, running water.
  5. Dry: Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer.
When soap and water are unavailable, an alcohol-based hand sanitiser containing at least 60% alcohol can be used in most situations. However, soap and water are preferred when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

    Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings
Hand hygiene plays an essential role in patient safety. In hospitals and other healthcare facilities, proper hand hygiene helps reduce the transmission of microorganisms between patients, healthcare professionals and visitors.
Healthcare workers follow hand hygiene protocols as part of infection prevention and control practices. Patients and visitors also contribute to a safer healthcare environment by keeping their hands clean.

At Adesh Hospital Haryana, awareness about hygiene and infection prevention forms an important part of promoting patient safety and responsible healthcare practices.

    Teaching Children Healthy Handwashing Habits
Children frequently touch shared objects, play surfaces and their faces, making hand hygiene especially important.
Parents and teachers can encourage children to wash their hands before meals, after outdoor activities and after using the toilet. Demonstrating the correct technique and making handwashing part of a daily routine can help develop lifelong healthy habits.

A Reminder on Global Handwashing Day
Observed on 15 October, Global Handwashing Day reminds us that a simple act of washing our hands with soap can make a meaningful difference in preventing infections.

    Small Habit, Lasting Health Benefits

Good health often begins with simple daily choices. Washing your hands correctly and consistently is an easy, affordable and effective way to help protect yourself, your family and your community.
Make handwashing a habit, not just a precaution.
